Sometimes people aren’t ready for work; it might be that they are still coming to terms with their diagnosis, that they are frightened of how it might affect their benefits or just that they simply don’t have the confidence. Meeting new people and the change in routine can be a real challenge. Just getting there, using a different route, using other buses or trains, working out where to go etc can all be a huge stress to someone with autism although we know that once someone is embedded in an organisation they bring loyalty and focus. This client was very appreciative of support in attending Phoenix trading to explore the possibility of 6 months voluntary experience in a working environment before launching into the process of finding a job. DASH went along with them, made the introductions, made sure they knew how to get there, which buses to catch etc. It made all the difference and this person is now using DASH to help them find a permanent job.
